5 Things You Can Do To Prevent Illness

March 11th, 2020 | Family News

In Light of COVID-19, Here’s How To Stay Safe:

In the midst of the new disease spreading the world, a novel coronavirus (or, more specifically, COVID-19), you may find yourself wondering what you can do on a personal level to help protect yourself and your family. Everyone can take measures to help limit the spread of the virus such as the ones we’ve listed here.

5. Practice Good Hygiene

Unsurprisingly, one of the most important things to do to help prevent infection is to practice good hygiene. This includes regular handwashing for at least 20 seconds with hot water and soap before eating or after coming into contact with potentially contaminated surfaces. The CDC specifically recommends limiting contact with such surfaces and then touching your face. Keeping your hands clean can help limit the spread of the virus as well as other bacteria that can compromise your health.

5. Keep Your Home and Workplace Clean

An extension of good hygiene, keeping the spaces that you spend most of your time in clean is an important part of staying healthy, especially during the outbreak. The most effective way to ensure your home is truly clean is to sanitize frequently touched surfaces like doorknobs, counters, toilets, and light switches with an alcohol solution that is at least 60% alcohol. Similar effective options include common household cleaners like Lysol and Clorox.

3. Know the Signs

Although it may take some time to develop symptoms, it’s important to keep close tabs on the signs that may point to COVID-19 infection. If you or a loved one have developed a fever, cough, or shortness of breath, be sure to contact your doctor as soon as possible to report the concerns. If you have come into contact with someone who may be infected, or if you have recently traveled from an area with an ongoing spread of COVID-19, even if you’re not showing any signs, you should also be in touch with your doctor as a precautionary measure.

2. Avoid Close Contact with Sick People

While this may seem like an obvious step, it’s a very important one. As the CDC proclaims, “The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus.” If an event has been canceled or your company enacts a work-from-home policy, it is best to follow these precautions and keep your distance from crowds as well as anyone who you don’t know, as they might be carrying the coronavirus (COVID-19) whether they are showing signs or not.

If you have started to show symptoms of being sick, even if it may not be the coronavirus (COVID-19), it’s important to stay home for your own benefit as well as your community’s.

1. Cover Coughs & Sneezes

Did you know that the coronavirus (COVID-19) can be transmitted to someone standing within 6 feet of an infected person through coughs and sneezes? It’s good practice, especially now, to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or to use the inside of your elbow when you sneeze or cough.
